Bullying has reached an all new high in schools, on the playground, on the Internet, and even on the school bus. Yes, everyone knows that bullying has been around since caveman days but it seems to be more prevalent now than ever. After reading Lauren Compton’s article “Bullies Targeting Kids on School Buses,” it brings closer to home the fact that we can’t protect our children all of the time. There are some strategies however that can be followed to try and stop bullying on the school bus.
Being bullied anywhere is dangerous but it’s even more so on a school bus. The driver needs to concentrate on driving not on taking care of the conflict situation going on behind him. The best way to go is a zero tolerance policy on the bus. There are no excuses if you bully someone, or if you simply can’t behave. You will have to find another way to get to school.
Installing cameras on buses will document bullying so that the driver and school authorities can look at it later instead of dealing with it on the road. The offenders should be suspended from riding the bus for the rest of the year.
These may seem like extreme rules but it’s better than ending up with a busload of injured children because of one bully who needs to be stopped. Just saying…
